Sleeping When Your are 45 or Older Denver CO

Sleep is important at all stages in life, unfortunately, there are many reasons why sleep becomes more difficult the older we get. Life seems to get in the way of a good night’s rest whether we’re up most of the night working or worrying. Though the standard “8 hours” of sleep is on any good list of ways to stay healthy, it is something that escapes most of us and moves way down on our list of priorities.

Sleeping When Your are 45 or Older

Getting Your Zzzzz’s When You’re 45 or Older

written by Dr. Michael Kaye |

Woman Sleeping Sleep is important at all stages in life, unfortunately, there are many reasons why sleep becomes more difficult the older we get. Life seems to get in the way of a good night’s rest whether we’re up most of the night working or worrying. Though the standard “8 hours” of sleep is on any good list of ways to stay healthy, it is something that escapes most of us and moves way down on our list of priorities.

You may know when you don’t get enough sleep, you’re not at your best, but why? Do you understand what makes sleep so important? Sleep is your body’s maintenance time. When you sleep, cell production is at an all time high. All of the wear and tear your body received during the day needs to be addressed, so your body uses the time that you sleep to repair and rebuild.

Your overall health relies on the health of millions of tiny cells. When your body isn’t given the chance to repair or replace damaged cells, bodily tissue becomes weak. Your skin may become more susceptible to damage. Bone remodeling already slows past the age of 30, and the deterioration becomes even more rapid if you deny your body sleep. Immunity may become weak when one or more component of this intricate system is lacking. Cardiovascular health is affected as well as brain health and the ability to concentrate and remember.

When you miss one or two nights of good rest, you may feel a bit tired, but your body is able to recover. When you repeatedly miss sleep, you begin to experience health problems. And, it’s not just about the quantity of sleep. Quality is extremely important.

We go through several stages of sleep beginning with light sleep and moving into the deeper stages of R.E.M. (rapid eye movement – dreaming) and beyond into the deepest stages of sleep where the repair and rebuilding of cells and bodily tissue takes place. It is at this time when antioxidants do the most work, fighting free radicals that damage cells. More skin cell production occurs during deep sleep than any other time of the day. Hormones and enzymes are produced, and your body is readied for the demands of the following day.

If you wake up repeatedly throughout the night because of sleep apnea (or your spouse who snores!) or other disturbances, you do not reach these important levels of deep sleep. Alcohol or sedatives can also interfere with your ability to reach these levels.

Sleep deprivation takes a toll on your health in many ways, including weight gain and premature aging. Adequate sleep needs to rank higher on your list of priorities, and though it seems a badge of honor to go on little sleep in our busy, busy world, it’s really more akin to making poor health choices.

To aim for a better night’s rest, try the following:

  1. Make your bedroom an oasis. Redecorate using soothing colors such as blue or green.
