written by Dave Hager | DAVE’S CORNER 20 MAY 2010 JACKSON CONTINUES “It would have been quicker to build a new house,” according to my contractor Phillip Watson and he was probably right. But he added that it wouldn’t have been the kind of exercise we’ve both come to enjoy. We’ve saved a century old home and brought it into the 21st century … or we will have once we’ve finished. Today the HVAC units were being moved and the final framing was being completed. We’ve added enough wood to have made it a new house. One thing for sure, she will be strong. And she’s going to be nice. It has the feel now of a happy place to be. The light pouring through the windows and the massive closets awaiting the new residents all seem ready to begin a new life. The electricians start Monday and all the old wiring will be stripped out and new put in its place. After that, the inspections are scheduled and then the insulation and drywall and roofing and bath fixtures and new kitchen installation . That’s the fun stuff. Paint, a new deck, porch railings and maybe even a swing… she’ll be ready then. July she goes on the market and we find a suitable fit for the old girl . So all you ladies who have been bored with the structural stuff, your interests are about to be peaked. DAVE’S CORNER 25 MARCH 2010 SELF DISCOVERY JOURNAL: ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER 40K And not in the good way… Today we completed rough in of plumbing and electrical with inspections tomorrow. This marked a billing day for work which explains where 17k went… but the good news is where the rest went. I just bought my 3rd investment property . A 100-year-old house in the middle of what was once the ghetto in Winston Salem and it’s a pip. It is, OH MY GOD, badly in need of renovating. The current owner was trying to rent it as a 3 bedroom, 1 bath home which would mean it would have been a home with only bedrooms and one half assed [at best] kitchen. I hope to prove a point with this that once ghetto doesn’t mean forever ghetto. It sits near a state supported seat of higher learning and I hope to get a couple of professors in there long term. It will be a total ‘gut’ job and will make a fascinating blog I’m sure. As to the old homestead , a look at the attached pix will show where the washer and dryer have been cooling their heels while awaiting a new home… and the space for the new home. The bathtub is in and full [for inspection] and we have an understanding of how the plumbing will work for new installation. The kitchen base cabinets are being reconstructed and the old mahogany face frame will go on when it is complete… which should be tomorrow. The working equipment is piled and arranged and nearing the end of i... |

written by Dave Hager | DAVE’S CORNER 10 APRIL 2010 SELF DISCOVERY JOURNAL : THANK GOD FOR OLD BILL COSBY CDS I’m exhausted and spent, but I found a cure. I bought all the old Bill Cosby CDs and they have been a life saver. I’m sitting around the waiting room of the South Carolina [Charlotte no longer has a Lincoln dealer] with my IPOD plugged in and laughing my ass off while the other inmates were watching some soap between sneaking looks at me out of the corner of their eyes. The floor is in the kitchen and tiling has begun in the bathroom; the appliances are here and get installed Monday [I hope] so progress is being made. My nerves are holding out, thanx to Cosby, but I’m feeling the pressure beating me down. So a quiet weekend is just what the doctor ordered. My decisions are about over for this project and I need to recharge because the next project is about to commence. I spend the evenings looking at snapshots of the house in Winston-Salem. I’m trying to anticipate the obstacles we are ly to face and examine options. So I’m going to go chill and have a cold drink and I’ll see you all next week.
