Overcoming Network Marketing Fears If someone gave me a magic wand that I could use to solve any network marketing issue my team faced, what would that issue be? Only one comes to mind. I suspect it was the same issue fifty years ago and would be the same issue fifty years from now. That issue is “ Fear of People.” Nothing holds people back from growing their business more than that.

Part of Network Marketing is Networking. The other part is Marketing. Both of those involve getting your message in front of people. Both of these can actually be fun. But for many would-be network marketers it’s the worst thing in the world. Meeting strangers? Trying to convince people we’ve never met – or even worse, people we know well! – that network marketing is legit and this opportunity is for real? Picking up the phone to follow-up with a prospective customer or business partner? What if they laugh at me? What if they say no? What if they tell me I’m going to ruin my credibility by being associated with this business (that actually happened to a team member of mine)?

We are afraid of people. Until we face this truth and deal with it, network marketing is never going to be a lot of fun, or very productive, for that matter. Network marketing is going to be an ordeal when we imagine judgment, rejection and ridicule at every turn. Notice that I said “imagine.” For the most part, these horrors of being judged, rejected and ridiculed are just that – imagination. I’m not saying some of your prospects won’t laugh at you. They will – because they see you moving away from them and they are jealous. Rather than shake off their own limiting behaviour and following you, they will try to hold you back on their level. And yes, some of your prospects will say “no”. That’s okay. This business is not for everyone. Wouldn’t you rather have an honest “no it’s not for me” than get a team member who had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to join? And then once they did join, never did anything to build their business until it failed completely and then vehemently told everyone they knew not to get involved with you because it didn’t work and was just a scam? And yes, there are people who believe that Network Marketing is hard, bad, unethical, sleazy, slimy, manipulative, dishonest and doesn’t really work. So what? There are people who say the same thing about insurance sales people, lawyers, car sales people, and politicians. And yet I’ll bet you have insurance and a car and have used or considered using a lawyer. (Politicians may be a different story. Some of the really ARE hard, bad, unethical, sleazy, slimy, manipulative, dishonest and don’t really work!).

“OK, Melodieann, I get it! But what can I do about it? How can I stop being run by my fears of people?”
