It’s Spring

written by Dr. Michael Kaye |

Michael Kaye It’s that time of the year again – spring. The gray and cold of winter will soon be a memory. Before we know it, the flowers will be blooming and warmer days will shine upon us.The glory of spring brings smiling faces, chirping birds, playing children, socializing neighbors, and new beginnings.
And soon we’ll see advertisements encouraging us to get in shape for the summer.

So begins another season when folks return to the gym and start a diet to lose the winter weight gain.

I suggest that you start now to get in shape for summer; don’t wait until the last minute! If you’re searching for a diet system that is affordable with a good outcome, I recommend Weight Watchers . You can join Weight Watchers on-line or by attending one of their local meetings. I

f you learn best by reading, I would recommend The Mediterranean Diet, The Perricone Diet, and The Glucose Revolution.

Quite often we hear conflicting information about what foods are good for us and what foods are not. In fact, the information in nutrition and diet books is often contradictory and can be very confusing. Most experts, however, agree upon some very basic tenets.

The basic tenets for a healthy nutritional lifestyle are:
- Do not consume partially hydrogenated oils
- Do not eat foods containing high fructose corn syrup
- Decrease white sugar and white flour consumption
- Decrease starch consumption
- Drink water throughout the day
- Avoid high levels of salt and fat, often found in canned and boxed food items
- Eat as many vegetables as you can, especially green ones

You’ll be surprised how quickly one can lose weight and get in shape by following these simple guidelines.
The quality of your food is also a consideration. You may want buy organic if your budget allows. Please keep in mind that there are different definitions for the labeling of organic foods .

- “100% organic” indicates that a product contains (excluding water and salt) only organically produced ingredients and processing aids.

- “Organic” indicates that foods are made from at least 95% USDA organic ingredients. Any remaining ingredients must consist of nonagricultural substances approved on the National List including specific non-organically produced agricultural products not commercially available in organic form.

- “Made with organic ingredients” indicates that the product consists of at least 70% organic ingredients.

Living a healthy nutritional lifestyle boils down to making good choices and following these rules:

— Choose quality foods and control the size of your portions.
— If you can’t pronounce or spell the ingredients, then you shouldn’t be eating it!
— The best foods to eat are those that you make yourself. Prepared foods, especially microwaveable items, usually contain high sodium and/or fat levels and boast an ingredient list of chemicals and preservatives.

Healthy nutrition is not that difficult to underst...
