Dog constipation and stool consistency might not be a pleasant topic, yet when it comes to your dog, this can be an early warning for many other potential health problems. Since a dog’s system has the ability to process food much faster than ours, it’s normal for them to move their bowels two or three times a day. It’s surprising for many to learn that their dog suffers from some of the same health issues that humans do such as constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

While all dogs can become constipated, a healthy diet that includes premium food sources, regular walks daily to help push the stool and fresh water will usually keep bowel movements regular and healthy. 

Dog owners must be diligent when it comes to reading their dog’s body language , expressions and emotions. Dogs are very easy to read providing the owner takes notice to what is happening with the dog. Older dogs are usually at a higher risk for dog constipation because they often move their bowels less than younger dogs. The longer the stool stays in the body, the more water the colon pulls from it which makes it dry and hard to pass.

Get a jump start on this common problem by taking notice of your dog’s stool consistency on a regular basis. 

Symptoms Of Dog Constipation

Besides the lack of a bowel movement for one or two days, the most common symptoms of dog constipation include:

- Appetite loss.

- Nausea and vomiting.

- Lack of energy .

- No interest in playing.

- Small traces of blood in the stool.

- -Wads of grass.

- -Dog bones.

- -Matted fur can block the rectum opening.

- -Diet

- - Dehydration

Treatment

- One method of avoiding and alleviating constipation is to add pumpkin to the diet. Pumpkin is very high in fiber and moisture. It must be 100% canned pumpkin with no added spices.

- A high fiber diet is a must if your dog develops constipation on a regular basis. Unflavored Metamucil can also be used in canned food as well. Read the label on the Metamucil container and be sure it provides 2.4 grams of soluble fiber per dose. If feeding canned food, give 1 teaspoon per meal for each 10-25 pounds of body weight. Look for improvement within one week. If your dog’s constipation has not improved after a week, make an appointment with your Veterinarian as soon as possible. Your Vet will look for underlying conditions such as an internal blockage or inflammation of the colon aka mega colon. Veterinarians can prescribe a medication or laxative to ease the pain and discomfort and regulate the bowels as well.
