Dental Health Series: Part 2 – Cavities and Amalgam Fillings

Cavities are spots of degeneration in the tooth enamel and are created in two ways. First, through improper nutrition or problems with the digestive process, the tooth pulp is not properly nourished, causing degenerative processes in the enamel and other parts of the tooth. It is a myth, however, that sugar by itself causes tooth decay . Most sweets like candy, ice cream, and commercial snacks are made from processed sugars and contain additives that create problems in digestive processes and impair tissues including teeth enamel. Processed sweets increase tissue metabolism, which can degenerate tissues because they are forced to use their own substances as nutrients. People who eat a lot of sweets usually have poor diets. A craving for sweets always indicates chronic problems in the primary digestive metabolism as a whole; these problems will always affect the teeth.
Second, cavities result from stressors in the nerve system. Remember, the tooth enamel is created from the same embryological tissues, the ectoderm, as the brain and the nerves. Chronic stress contributes to the degeneration of tissues including tooth enamel, which eventually can result in cavities. To deal with the cause of cavities, it is vital to make sure that the digestive processes and nutrition are in order and that chronic stress in the nerve system has been resolved.
When dentists find a cavity, they usually fill it. This is a relatively simple procedure and is not very invasive. The spot of decay on the enamel is drilled out and cleaned down to the healthy tissue, and the hole is filled with a material to strengthen the tooth. However, two problems can occur with filling the teeth. One minor concern is that in the event of a deep cavity, if the drilling is not done properly, the procedure may damage the pulp, causing the tooth to die. The main problem, however, pertains to the choice of filling material.
For almost a century, dentists have used amalgam fillings, a mixture of metals that includes mercury as a main ingredient. Considerable research has shown mercury to be highly toxic. It damages the functions of the liver and kidneys, affects the entire intestinal tract, and compromises the digestive process as well as the metabolic energies of the kidney. Moreover, it strongly inhibits the immune system ’s functions and the body’s healing processes.
Mercury is heavy metal that always seeks the tissues that have the highest metabolism, such as the liver, kidneys, and intestinal tract.. If a pregnant woman has mercury fillings, the mercury toxins will be drawn directly to the fetus because the fetus has a higher metabolic rate than any other of the mother’s own tissues. This means that the infant is born with mercury toxicity, which it will have to cleanse from its system in order to develop healthfully. Natural health practitioners often find that whe...
